Junk removal pricing is not complicated once you understand what drives it. Most people are confused because they have seen wildly different prices quoted for what sounds like the same job. Here is how it actually works from the perspective of a company that prices hundreds of jobs a year in DFW.

The primary variable: volume

Junk removal is priced by how much space your items take up in the truck. A standard junk removal truck holds roughly 12 to 16 cubic yards. Your job is priced based on the fraction of that capacity it fills. One sofa might fill an eighth of a truck. A full garage might fill most of it.

This is why experienced crews can quote over the phone. When you describe what you have, a good estimator mentally pictures how much truck space it occupies. "A couch, a loveseat, and a broken dining set" translates to a quarter-truck job. "A full two-car garage with furniture, boxes, and old appliances" is a full truck or more.

Secondary variable: weight

Volume is primary, but weight matters for dense materials. A truck full of construction debris, concrete, or tile reaches weight limits long before it reaches volume limits. The same amount of space filled with tile costs more to haul than the same space filled with cardboard boxes. For most residential furniture and household items, weight is not a major factor. For heavy materials like tile, concrete, appliances, or pianos, it affects the quote.

Access affects labor time

A crew can load a ground-floor garage in a fraction of the time it takes to clear a fourth-floor apartment with a narrow staircase. Stairs, long hallways, tight doorways, and restricted parking for the truck all add labor time. Labor time is factored into the price, which is why access details matter when you call. Always mention stairs, elevator requirements, or unusual access situations when getting a quote.

Item type matters for specific things

Appliances with refrigerant cost more because of the legal requirement to handle refrigerant properly before disposal. Pianos, hot tubs, pool tables, and safes cost more because of the specialized labor and equipment required. Most household furniture and general junk falls into standard pricing. Specialty items are priced separately.

Why prices vary between companies

Franchise operations build royalty fees, national marketing costs, and call center overhead into their pricing. Local owner-operated companies with lower overhead can often price the same job lower and still cover their costs. Truck size also varies. A small pickup truck haul "business" that shows up with a pickup and a trailer prices differently than a company running a full 16-cubic-yard junk truck.

The other variable: some companies are simply more aggressive on margin. The market tolerates a range. What matters is that the price is quoted before the job starts, holds when the crew arrives, and has no hidden fees attached.

How we calculate a quote on the phone

You tell us what you have. We picture the volume. We factor in any access issues you mention. We check whether any specialty items are involved. We give you a number. That number is what you pay. If we get there and the job is significantly larger than described, we discuss it before we start loading.
