One of the first questions people ask when they call is how long the job will take. It depends heavily on what you have, how accessible it is, and how much of it there is. Here's a realistic breakdown by job type.
| Job type | Typical time on-site |
|---|---|
| Single item, sofa, fridge, mattress) | 15, 30 minutes |
| 2, 3 items, easy access | 30, 45 minutes |
| One room, bedroom, living room) | 45 min, 1.5 hours |
| Single-car garage cleanout | 1, 2 hours |
| Two-car garage cleanout | 2, 3 hours |
| 2, 3 rooms of furniture and debris | 2, 3 hours |
| Storage unit (10x10) | 1, 2 hours |
| Storage unit (10x20) | 2, 3 hours |
| Full house cleanout, average home) | 4, 8 hours |
| Full house cleanout, large or heavy) | 1, 2 days |
| Hoarding cleanout, single room) | 2, 4 hours |
| Hoarding cleanout, full house) | 1, 3 days |
What affects how long it takes
Access. Items on the ground floor near the door load in a fraction of the time of items in the attic, basement, or up multiple flights of stairs. A two-person crew moving a sofa from a third-floor apartment takes three times as long as moving the same sofa from a ground-floor house.
Disassembly requirements. Beds, large shelving units, pool tables, and built-ins sometimes need to be taken apart before they'll fit through doors. This adds time, usually 30 to 60 minutes per item that needs disassembly.
Weight and density of the load. A full truck of tile takes longer to load than a full truck of cardboard boxes, because each piece is heavier and has to be placed more carefully. Heavy loads slow the work down.
Decision-making during the job. On estate and hoarding cleanouts, the job slows down when items need to be checked with the homeowner before removal. If you want to go through things as we work, factor in extra time. If you've already sorted and just need it hauled, it goes faster.
