Nobody warns you when you inherit a piano that it's going to be one of the hardest things to get out of a house. An upright piano weighs 300 to 700 pounds. A grand piano weighs 500 to 1,200 pounds. They don't fit through most doorways without turning, they can't go on dollies without risk, and the market for unwanted pianos is worse than you'd think. Here's an honest guide to your options.

Can you donate it?

Maybe, if it plays. A playable upright piano in reasonable condition can sometimes be donated to a DFW music school, church, community center, or nonprofit arts organization. The demand for donated pianos is lower than people expect, because most organizations already have what they need. Call before assuming, ask if they're accepting pianos, if they'll pick it up, and what condition they require.

Facebook Marketplace free listings for playable pianos do move, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. Post it, give it two weeks. The person taking it is responsible for transport, which means they'll need to bring their own crew. Many pianos listed free on Marketplace sit unclaimed if they need significant tuning or repair.

Non-playable pianos

A piano that hasn't been tuned in 20 years, has broken keys, cracked soundboard, or significant damage has almost no donation market. Most music schools won't take a piano that needs thousands in repair. In that situation, removal is the path forward.

How piano removal works

An upright piano typically takes three people to move safely, one is never enough, two is risky. The piano needs to be tilted to navigate doorways, protected from wall and floor damage during the move, and loaded onto a truck using a piano board or heavy-duty dolly. If stairs are involved, that adds difficulty and time.

We handle upright pianos regularly. Grand pianos are more complex, the legs detach, the lid comes off, and the body goes on a piano board on its side. Grand removal should be handled by crews with specific experience moving grands to avoid damage to the instrument and your home. Call us and describe your piano and access situation, we'll tell you honestly whether it's within what we handle or whether you need a specialized piano mover.

What happens to a removed piano

Playable pianos in decent shape may go to a reseller, school, or nonprofit. Non-playable pianos are typically broken down, the cast iron plate and metal components recycled, the wood frame and keys going to appropriate disposal. Very few pianos end up in a landfill in their entirety when handled by a reputable crew.
