Spring in DFW is the best time for a real cleanout, temperatures are still manageable before summer heat arrives, and the motivation to start fresh is at its highest. Whether you're clearing a single cluttered room or tackling the full house, here's a practical room-by-room breakdown and how to handle the haul at the end.
Start with the high-accumulation zones first
Don't start with closets or bedrooms. Start with garage, attic, storage rooms, and any areas where things go to be forgotten. These spaces hold the most volume and give you the earliest sense of scale. If you're going to hire a junk crew, the size of these spaces tells you how much truck capacity you'll need.
Room by room: what to target
Garage
Empty the garage completely into the driveway before making any decisions. Broken tools, lawn equipment that doesn't start, old paint cans, holiday decorations you've skipped for three years, sports equipment no one uses, all of this is a candidate. See our full garage cleanout guide for the complete process.
Attic
In DFW, schedule attic work for morning, afternoon attic temperatures in spring can already exceed 100°F. Target: old holiday decorations, stored items that haven't been accessed in three or more years, and anything from a previous decade that you forgot you had. If it's been up there that long, you don't need it.
Closets
Clothes you haven't worn in a year, shoes that don't fit, linens and towels in excess. The rule that works: if you needed it in the last 12 months, keep it. If not, out it goes. Donate usable clothing to Salvation Army, Goodwill, or local charity shops in the DFW area. Worn or damaged clothing goes in a textile recycling bin.
Kitchen
Appliances bought with good intentions and used twice, the dehydrator, the bread maker, the juicer, are classic spring cleaning targets. If it works and you haven't used it in a year, list it free on Marketplace or donate it. If it's broken, it goes in the haul.
Spare rooms and "catch-all" spaces
Every house has one, the room that became a storage room. A focused afternoon can clear it. Sort everything into four piles: keep, donate, sell, haul. The haul pile goes straight to the truck.
What to do with what you're clearing out
- Furniture in decent shape: list free on Nextdoor or Facebook Marketplace, or schedule a Salvation Army/Habitat pickup
- Clothing and small household goods: Goodwill, Salvation Army, or neighborhood Little Free Pantries
- Electronics: Best Buy free e-waste drop-off, see our e-waste guide
- Everything else: junk removal crew or city bulk pickup
The one-weekend approach
Saturday morning: sort every room. Create the donate pile, the sell pile, and the haul pile. Saturday afternoon: schedule the donation pickup or take it to drop-off, list sell items online. Sunday morning: junk crew arrives to take the haul pile. Sunday afternoon: the house is clear.
We can usually accommodate a Sunday pickup scheduled from Saturday if you call during the day. Call and describe what you'll have, we'll give you a price and confirm the window.
