Moving costs money by the hour and by the pound. Every item you do not move is money saved on the moving truck and time saved on moving day. Pre-move decluttering is one of the highest-return things you can do in the weeks before a move, and the items you are not taking need somewhere to go. Here is how to approach it in Grapevine and DFW.

The financial argument for decluttering before you move

Moving companies charge by weight and time. A full truckload that is 20 percent heavier than it needs to be costs more at pickup and at delivery. Items that get loaded, driven across town or across the state, and then thrown away at the new place cost you twice: once to move and once to dispose of. The junk removal call before the move is almost always cheaper than moving the junk and dealing with it later.

Start six weeks before moving day

The earlier you start, the more options you have for each item. Six weeks out, you have time to list furniture on Marketplace, schedule donation pickups, and give yourself enough room to make thoughtful decisions rather than rushed ones. Two days before the truck arrives, you are making fast decisions. Start early.

Room by room: what to question

Garage and storage areas first. The garage accumulates the highest percentage of items that will not survive the "is this worth moving?" question. Start here. Old tools that do not work, equipment for activities you no longer do, items stored because there was no other place for them. These are the first candidates to go.

Furniture. Apply this test: if you were furnishing the new place from scratch, would you buy this piece? If not, do not move it. Furniture that has seen better days, pieces that do not fit the size or style of the new home, and duplicates are all candidates. Pieces in decent shape sell on Marketplace. Worn pieces go to junk removal.

Kitchen. Appliances used twice and abandoned. Duplicates of everyday tools. Items that fit the current kitchen but will not fit the new one. The move is the best natural point to make these decisions.

Clothing and linens. The standard: if you have not worn it in 18 months, you will not miss it at the new place. Donate usable clothing to Goodwill. Worn textiles go in textile recycling bins.

Books, media, and miscellaneous. Books are heavy. Moving boxes of books you will not read again is an expensive way to move them. Libraries, used bookstores, and Little Free Libraries in DFW will take most books. Electronics and media can go to e-waste recycling.

Schedule the junk pickup before moving day

Once you know what is not going to the new place, call a junk crew before moving day. Having the unwanted items cleared before the movers arrive means the movers are not working around junk, the staging areas are clean, and you are not making decisions about what to move in real time on moving day. Call us a week before your move to schedule the haul. Same-day is available if you call before noon for more urgent situations.
