An old lawn mower that has seen its last season is a common garage occupant across DFW. They are heavy, potentially still have oil and gas in them, and most curbside pickup programs will not take them. Here is what your options actually look like in Grapevine and across the metro.

Step one: drain the fluids

Before doing anything with an old mower, drain the gas tank and the oil. Gasoline is a hazardous material that cannot go in regular waste or a junk removal truck as liquid. Run the engine until it is out of fuel, or siphon the gas into a container and take it to a household hazardous waste drop-off. Change the oil and take the old oil to an auto parts store, most of which accept used motor oil for free. Once the mower is dry, all your options open up.

Option 1: Sell a working mower

A push mower that runs sells easily on Facebook Marketplace in DFW. A working riding mower in decent shape can sell for $100 to $800 depending on brand, age, and condition. Post with a photo and an honest description. Buyers come to you. If it does not sell within a week, move to the next option.

Option 2: Scrap metal buyers

A mower that no longer runs is mostly steel, which has scrap metal value. Search for scrap metal buyers in DFW. Some will pick up larger items like riding mowers. Push mowers you can drop off yourself. The payout is modest but it costs you nothing and diverts the metal from landfill. Drain the fluids before dropping off at any scrap facility.

Option 3: Habitat for Humanity ReStore

Some Habitat ReStore locations in DFW accept working lawn equipment. Call before bringing anything in. They are selective and working condition is required.

Option 4: Junk removal crew

When the mower is beyond repair, you do not want to deal with draining it yourself, or it is part of a larger garage cleanout, a junk crew is the fastest option. We take push mowers and riding mowers as part of any garage or yard cleanout job. A single mower as a standalone pickup runs $75 to $125 depending on size. Combined with other garage items, it is priced into the total load.

Note: drain the fuel before we arrive. We cannot take mowers with liquid fuel in the tank. We can take bone-dry mowers regardless of whether they run.

Riding mowers specifically

Riding mowers are large and heavy. A non-running riding mower that you cannot move is a job for a crew with the right equipment. Mention that you have a riding mower when you call so we can bring what we need to load it. Riding mower removal alone runs $125 to $200 depending on size and access.
