Old mattresses are awkward to move, bulky to store, and most people aren't sure what the rules are around disposing of them in Texas. Here are your real options in the DFW area, what each one costs, how long it takes, and when each makes sense.

Option 1: City bulk pickup

Grapevine and most DFW cities will pick up mattresses through their bulk waste program. You schedule in advance, put the mattress at the curb by your designated collection time, and the city hauls it. Free for residents. Limitations: advance scheduling required, typically a week out, mattresses must be at the curb yourself, and some cities charge an additional fee for mattresses specifically.

Option 2: Retailer takeback when buying new

If you're buying a new mattress, ask the retailer whether they'll remove the old one. Major mattress retailers. Mattress Firm, Sleep Number, and others with DFW locations, often offer mattress removal as part of delivery. Some include it free, some charge $20 to $50. This is the easiest option if you're buying new and the timing lines up.

Option 3: Mattress recycling centers

Texas has mattress recycling options, though they're less widely available than in some states. The Mattress Recycling Council operates the "Bye Bye Mattress" program with drop-off locations in some Texas cities. Call ahead to confirm availability and whether a fee applies. You transport it yourself.

Option 4: Junk removal crew

Fastest and most convenient for most situations. We pick up the mattress from wherever it is in your home, you don't move it to the curb, you don't schedule weeks out, and same-day service is usually available. A single mattress runs $75 to $125 depending on size and access. If you're clearing a bedroom or doing a larger cleanout, the mattress cost is typically rolled into the total load price.

Can you donate an old mattress?

Almost never. Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Habitat ReStores in DFW do not accept used mattresses for hygiene reasons. If a mattress is in exceptional condition, nearly new, no stains, no odor, some nonprofits focused on housing transitions will consider it. But for a typical used mattress, donation is not a realistic option. Recycling or hauling is the path.

What about box springs?

Box springs follow the same rules as mattresses, bulk pickup, retailer takeback, or junk crew. We haul them. If you're replacing both the mattress and box spring, tell us upfront so we factor both into the quote.
