Old paint is one of the most common hazardous household waste items in DFW garages, and one of the most misunderstood. You cannot put liquid paint in the regular trash, and junk removal crews cannot haul it either. Here is what the rules are and where it actually needs to go in the Grapevine and DFW area.

Why paint cannot go in the trash or the haul truck

Liquid paint, particularly oil-based paint and stains, is classified as hazardous household waste. The solvents and pigments can contaminate soil and groundwater when improperly disposed of. Even water-based latex paint is not accepted in standard waste pickup in most Texas municipalities when it is still liquid. Hardened or completely dried latex paint is generally accepted in regular trash in Texas, but liquid paint is not.

Latex paint: how to dispose of it yourself

If you have a small amount of latex paint you want to dispose of cheaply, dry it out. Open the can and let it air dry completely in a well-ventilated area away from heat and flames. Add kitty litter or commercial paint hardener to speed the process. Once the paint is fully solid, the can and dried paint can go in your regular trash. This works for small quantities. Do not try to dry out many gallons this way.

Where to take paint for proper disposal in DFW

PaintCare drop-off locations

PaintCare operates a paint take-back program with drop-off locations at hardware stores throughout DFW. Sherwin-Williams, Home Depot, and other participating retailers accept old paint for recycling at no charge. Search the PaintCare website for the nearest drop-off location to Grapevine. This is the most convenient free option for most residents.

Household Hazardous Waste events

Tarrant County and Dallas County both run Household Hazardous Waste collection events where residents can drop off paint, chemicals, pesticides, and other hazardous materials at no charge. These events are held multiple times per year. Check the Tarrant County Environmental Services website or your city's website for upcoming dates. These events typically accept any quantity of paint.

City of Fort Worth HHW facility

Fort Worth operates a permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility that accepts paint year-round from Tarrant County residents. This is the most reliable option if you cannot make it to a scheduled event. Call ahead to confirm current hours and accepted materials.

What we do with paint cans during a garage cleanout

When we do a garage cleanout that includes old paint cans, we sort them on-site. Empty and dried cans can go in the haul. Cans with any liquid paint inside need to be set aside for one of the disposal options above. We will flag them for you during the cleanout so you know exactly what needs separate handling. Everything else in the garage goes in the truck.
