Safes are among the single heaviest items in any home. A mid-size gun safe weighs 400 to 700 pounds. A large home safe or gun cabinet can exceed 1,000 pounds. Moving one incorrectly damages floors, walls, and the people trying to move it. Safe removal in DFW requires the right equipment and enough crew members to do it safely. Here is what to know before you call.
Types of safes and what makes each different
Gun safes. The most common type we remove in DFW. Sizes range from small handgun safes (under 100 pounds) to full-size long gun safes that weigh 600 to 1,000 pounds. The door alone on a large gun safe can weigh 200 pounds. These require a dolly rated for the weight and multiple people working together.
Floor safes. Some safes are bolted or recessed into the floor or wall. Removal may require additional steps to detach from the mounting surface. Tell us if the safe is bolted in when you call.
Fireproof file safes. Generally lighter than gun safes but still heavy. These are straightforward to remove in most cases.
Small handgun or jewelry safes. Under 75 pounds. These are often manageable without a full crew and may price differently. Call and describe the size and weight.
Before we arrive
Empty the safe completely. Remove all firearms, ammunition, documents, valuables, and any contents before the crew arrives. We haul the safe, not what is inside it. Make sure the safe is unlocked and open before the crew gets there.
Measure doorways on the route out. Large gun safes do not always fit through interior doorways, especially if they were installed before surrounding construction was completed. Measure the safe and the narrowest doorway on the path to the exit. If it will not fit, the safe may need to be tipped on its side or taken apart. Call us and describe the dimensions. We can advise before showing up.
Can you sell a used safe?
Quality gun safes from brands like Liberty, Fort Knox, and Browning retain value and sell on Facebook Marketplace and gun forums. If the safe is in good condition and you are not in a hurry, post it and see. Buyers typically arrange and pay for their own moving. If it does not sell, or if the safe is damaged or obsolete, we haul it.
